livMatS Colloquium | Dr. Margret Wohlfahrt-Mehrens (Zentrum für Sonnenenergie-und Wasserstoff Forschung Baden-Württemberg) | Materials development for lithium ion batteries – From particle design to full cell operation

Abstract
Lithium-ion batteries are the key components for the ongoing transition to electro mobility in the transport sector, the intermittent storage of renewable energy in the energy sector and are already widely used in numerous industrial applications. The presentation will give an overview of the basic principles of lithium ion batteries, of the key performance indicators for further improvement and of recent research trends concerning active materials for the negative (mainly silicon-based composites) and positive electrode. On the positive side, three material classes will be discussed: Ni rich layered transition metal oxides, which are presently dominating in commercial lithium-ion batteries and cobalt free high-voltage spinel oxides and lithium-rich manganese based layered oxides for the near to medium term future. Strategies to increase the performance and the long life stability include i) introduction of suitable doping elements, ii) protective surface coatings, iii) gradient particles, iv) tailored crystallite and particle design, which have a strong impact on the electrode design and the electrode manufacturing process, which will be critically discussed.

Brief Bio
Dr. Margret Wohlfahrt-Mehrens is heading the Department of Accumulators Materials Research at the ZSW (Zentrum für Sonnenenergie- und Wasserstoff-Forschung, Baden-Württemberg) in Ulm. She studied Chemistry at the University of Bonn and received her PhD in Chemistry from the University Witten/Herdecke in 1989. She has been working in the field of electrochemical energy storage systems at ZSW since 1990. She has received the Technology Award 2020 of The International Battery Association (IBA) for her significant contribution to the further development of battery technology. She is member of the board of directors of the Helmholtz Institute Ulm, leader of a research unit in the Post Lithium Storage Cluster of Excellence (PoLiS), co-coordinator of the BMBF competence cluster for battery materials (ExcellBattMat) and spokesperson of the BMBF battery competence cluster Analytics & Quality Assurance (AQua).
