Abstract
The fatigue life prediction of cast materials is usually based on structural-mechanical models, which are often fed by material parameters from standards. Here, batch-specific influences are generally neglected, since the characterization effort is only worthwhile in exceptional cases. This work discusses the future role of digital knowledge bases and expert systems, which have the potential to link relevant information from component production with quality assurance data in order to enable more precise service life evaluations by enriching industrial data with FAIR research data.

Dr. Christoph Schweizer studied Physics at the Albert-Ludwigs University Freiburg and finished his Diploma in 2007. Between 2008 and 2013 he worked as a research assistant at the Fraunhofer IWM and finished his PhD about mechanism based lifetime concepts for thermomechanical fatigue loading in 2013 at the KIT Karlsruhe. In the same year he became head of the research group “Lifetime concepts and thermomechanics”. Since 2018 he is now head of the Fraunhofer IWM business unit “Assessment of materials and lifetime concepts”.
