The Autonomous Eyeball
The central objective of my project is to design and demonstrate an eyeball-like optical system which autonomously adjusts its optical functionality in response to the external environment. This system will employ compliant optical materials combined with liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) actuators. The entire system will encompass a tunable aperture, a tunable lens and a solid-state imager. This "eyeball" will function as an imaging system featuring a variable aperture and variable focal length, mirroring the functionality of a human eye. The concept proposed in this scheme will solely rely on optical actuation, necessitating only electrical power for the imaging chip. This paves the way for ultra-low-power active optical systems.
