AI²nterface – Advanced interfaces for modular livMatS through AI assisted design and experimental realization of programmable materials interfaces
Interfaces play an important role in livMatS programmable (meta)materials, as they have a huge impact on the structural properties and the lifetime of a material. Moreover, a contact or an interaction on the interface enables information transfer (e.g. mechanical, electrical, chemical). The project aims to develop modular programmable metamaterials with adaptive interfaces for information transfer. These materials are designed to reversibly change their state under certain conditions e.g. temperature or external forces (if-then-else-condition) and interlock with each other, allowing local control of mechanical interactions and load transfer. The stable or metastable states of the modules can be achieved through shape morphing or capillarity forces. Photo or thermally induced CHic polymerization realizes reversible adhesion of the interfaces. The project focuses on the optimal design of shape changing mechanical metamaterials. For this, we use biology-inspired AI models for scanning possible unit cell geometries and interlocking mechanisms.

NDFI-MatWerk
The Material Science and Engineering consortium (MatWerk) is establishing an infrastructure for research data management as part of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) in Germany. The interdisciplinary research at livMatS and the challenges related to the use of common language and standards for documentation and data exchange are particularly interesting for the infrastructure use case, which focuses on the development of ontologies and their alignment to other application-and higher level ontologies.
